Marouane Fellaini faces fortnight out with knee injury

08/10/2017 at 11:51 Updated 08/10/2017 at 12:08

Manchester United's midfield injury concerns deepened on Saturday when in-form Belgian Marouane Fellaini picked up a knee injury on international duty which will keep him away from the field for a couple of weeks.

The combative Fellaini has been pivotal to United's unbeaten start to the season but lasted just 29 minutes of a World Cup qualifier against Bosnia in Sarajevo before limping off after landing awkwardly on his knee.

Although the 29-year-old left the Grbavica Stadium without the use of crutches following Belgium's 4-3 win, coach Roberto Martinez offered a sombre assessment of the player's condition.

"We are all worried about Fellaini," Martinez told reporters. "We fear that there's ligament damage."

The Belgian FA said on Sunday Fellaini "will be out for a couple of weeks with a left knee injury" after the player underwent an MRI scan.

The injury comes a week before United's clash with Liverpool on Oct. 14.

United manager Jose Mourinho had voiced concerns over how the international break could stall his side's momentum ahead of next Saturday's high-profile clash at Anfield and a mounting injury list will only dampen his mood.

Record signing Paul Pogba is absent after picking up a hamstring injury against Basel in the Champions League last month and Michael Carrick, who has played just once this season, is also a major doubt for the Liverpool match.

Marouane Fellaini is not ready to move to China

March 08 2017, 09:42

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini says he is in no rush to follow the money trail to China.

United recently invoked a one-year extension clause in the 29-year-old's contract to keep the Belgium midfielder at the club until 2018, yet talk over his future remains.

Tianjin Quanjian manager Fabio Cannavaro claims to have been offered Fellaini, for whom a money-spinning move east is not a serious target right now.

"We will see but this is not a priority," Fellaini told Sport/Foot Magazine.

"But I am honest, if I am going to China, it is finished for me the national team. The first thing I do is call the coach to tell him that I stop."

Fellaini remains an important squad player for United, despite fan criticism that peaked when he was jeered by pockets of home fans in December.

However, manager Jose Mourinho has continually backed the under-fire midfielder.

"He could have killed me, but, no, he defended me, he protected me," Fellaini said. "I will never forget."

Manchester United news: Marouane Fellaini will not have contract extended beyond 2018, Metro News

Marouane Fellaini will not have his contract extended beyond 2018 by Manchester United – report

Manchester United do not plan to extend Marouane Fellaini’s contract beyond 2018, according to reports.

The Belgian, 27, is keen to stay at Old Trafford when his current deal expires in three years’ time, but it is believed that United see the midfielder as expendable, according to the Daily Star.

Used more as a substitute than a regular starter at United, sources close to the club suggest that next summer they will try to recoup some of the £28million they paid for him in 2013.

Fellaini has started just one Premier League match this season under manager Louis van Gaal and was rarely used by David Moyes, the previous United boss who signed Fellaini from Everton.

It has also been confirmed by Van Gaal that, after picking up an injury in training on Friday, Fellaini has pulled out of the Belgium squad to face Italy and Spain over the international break.

Fabio Cannavaro claims he turned down Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini for his Tianjin Quanjian side: 'I was looking for a different profile'

Published: 21:27 BST, 2 March 2017 | Updated: 00:53 BST, 3 March 2017

Marouane Fellaini was offered to Chinese heavyweights Tianjin Quanjian, their manager Fabio Cannavaro has claimed.

The Manchester United midfielder recently signed a new one-year extension, which now runs until 2018, but has started just three Premier League games since October.

Fellaini was jeered by United supporters in December after a mistake away at Everton, before Jose Mourinho backed the 29-year-old to the hilt.

Yet Cannavaro - the former central defender who took over last June - revealed he turned down the opportunity to land the Belgium international.

'He was offered to me, but I told his agent that I was looking for a different profile,' the Italian said.

Cannavaro feels the wealth of money in the Chinese Super League will start attracting some of the world's biggest names.

Tianjin Quanjian boss Fabio Cannavaro has claimed he was given the chance to sign Fellaini

The 2006 World Cup winner rather optimistically suggested that Tianjin Quanjian have an outside chance of signing Everton's Romelu Lukaku in the future.

'The problem is Everton - they do not just let him go,' he added. The fact that Lukaku is younger, is not the problem.

'Lukaku could be perfect to China. Look at Oscar. He is 25 and swapped Chelsea for Shanghai SIPG. Why? Because football is football in the world. Every player wants to play at a club that wins.'
