The Best Of The Bundesliga 2015/16 Hinrunde

The Bundesliga Hinrunde certainly lived up to its reputation as one on the best leagues in football with five months of excitement, incident, drama, goals and above all mouth-watering football. Bayern may have stormed the first half of the season, but the title is by no means a foregone conclusion.

The race for the Champions League spots is heating up, the newly promoted sides continue to surprise everyone, while the battle against relegation looks set to be as intriguing as ever.

Let’s take a look back at the best the Hinrunde had to offer…

It is almost impossible to look beyond Bayern Munich even though Borussia Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel have been impressive. The Rekordmeister opened with ten straight wins, almost went through the entire first half of the campaign unbeaten, scored a whopping 46 goals while conceding just eight and regularly delivered stunning football along the way. All that remains is for the Bavarians to not let the news of Pep Guardiola’s summer departure get in the way of repeating their form in the Rückrunde to clinch a fourth title in a row.

There are plenty of contenders for this, but in terms of instant impact and consistency over seventeen matches, I’ve gone for Bayern’s Douglas Costa. From the very game when he dazzled against Hamburg, the superlatives have just kept flowing for the Brazilian winger. Both Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller have hugely profited from his delivery and he has been a constant menace to Bundesliga fullbacks. The biggest compliment, though, has to be the fact that Bayern have not missed Franck Ribéry at all this season thanks to Costa’s brilliance.

Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have a new rival for the crown of Bundesliga top scorer in the form of Bayer Leverkusen’s Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez. The Werkself pulled off quite the transfer coup to sign the Mexican from Manchester United in the transfer window and he’s repaid their faith instantly in goals. Eleven goals in just fourteen Bundesliga games has been a fantastic return. He is currently fourth in scoring charts, but if his current rate of putting the ball in the net continues, he’ll have to be looking at getting is name etched on the Torschutzenkanone.

Andre Schubert of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Thomas Tuchel were contenders, but it was really a toss-up between the two newly promoted sides for this one. However, I couldn’t decide so Ralph Hasenhüttl and Dirk Schuster can share this one. You would have been hard-pressed to find many Bundesliga observers predicting anything but an instant return to the second tier for the two surprise Aufstieger, but they have caused more than a few surprises and have shown that while they don’t possess the star squads of some teams, they have been led superbly by their respective coaches.

Both Hasenhüttl and Schuster have done superbly well to steer their teams to 11 th and 13 th respectively. Should they remain in the top flight come May, then huge kudos will have to go to both trainers.

Leroy Sané showed great promise last season and he has shown this season that there is plenty more to come from him as he shone as Schalke’s stand-out player of the Hinrunde. His goal against Eintracht Frankfurt on match day six showed his guile and skills, while his magic against Bayern Munich on match day thirteen led to Max Meyer’s equaliser. He already has four goals and four assists. The only downside to his impressive form is the increased interest from bigger and richer clubs wanting to steal him from Schalke’s grasp, already reportedly dangling millions in transfer fees to obtain the teenager’s signature.

Again, there has been an absolute array of top games so far this season and picking a number one was tough, but the Klassiker between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund has got the nod. The top two teams in the league went head-to-head at the Allianz Arena on match day eight with Bayern stunning their visitors from the Ruhr 5-1.

With so many stunning efforts to choose from, it had to be a case of having a top three. There are bound to be many, who will think I’ve missed an obvious contender, but that’s the joy of football- everybody’s got an opinion.

3- Fabian Lustenberger (Hertha Berlin v Stuttgart)

The Hertha captain led by example as he thundered the ball past Odisseas Vlachodimos (what a name!) on match day four after Stuttgart had failed to clear a free-kick. He could not have caught the ball any sweeter and any more power would have ripped a hole in the net. Bam!

2- Daniel Didavi (VfB Stuttgart v Wolfsburg)

Stuttgart caused a shock on the final match day with a 3-1 win over Wolfsburg. Daniel Didavi scored twice, but his first to equalise was a stunner. Receiving the ball from Lukas Rupp, the midfielder let rip with a left-foot shot that dipped and swerved into the top corner of the Wolfsburg net.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roLcnFEm5oE&w=560&h=315]

1- Robert Lewandowski (Bayern v Wolfsburg)

The Pole scored 16 goals in the Hinrunde, but the pick of those has to be the last of his record-breaking five he scored against Wolfsburg. A right wing cross from Philipp Lahm looked to be a little behind the striker, but he adjusted his body well before turning and firing an acrobatic first-time volley into the roof of the net.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5IutazG9qU&w=560&h=315]

“Where I come from in the Rheinland, ‘Egghead’ is not an insult” 1FC Köln manager Jörg Schmadtke after being sent to the stands by referee Guido Winkmann for abusive language during the Billy Goats 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen at the Weser Stadion.
